How to Detox in a Healthy Way April 07 2016

With all the buzz, all the offers, the question remains – what is a good detox, one that truly energizes you and is healthy? Some key elements include:

  • Should include high quality protein sources. Reason: Proteins contain Amino Acids that are necessary components for enzymes and the liver detoxification pathway. How? For example: Consume vegetarian sources such as beans, nuts, and seeds -including lentils, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, hemp, chia, almonds, or clean animal sources such as wild caught cold water fish.
  • Obtain adequate nutrients. Reason: Detoxification is a complex process that utilizes a number of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. How? For example: Eat nutrient-dense foods such as fresh, deeply pigmented vegetables and fruits, that are also high in B Vitamins.
  • Consume cruciferous vegetables. Why? Vegetables in this family help support liver detoxification and estrogen metabolism. How? For Example: Consume brussel sprouts, bok choy, kale, cabbage, parsley, cilantro, other dark greens, etc.
  • Consume antioxidant-rich foods. Why? During the multistep detoxification process, your body can create some toxic metabolites that can cause damage if they are not buffered by protective nutrients.
How? Supplement or include foods rich in vitamin C, magnesium, selenium, and phytonutrients such as those found in garlic, onions, fruits, and vegetables. Artichokes, turmeric, and coriander contain silymarin (the liver-supportive antioxidant found in milk thistle).
  • Drink plenty of pure water. Why? Part of the detoxification process eliminates toxins through urine and sweat, so you want to make sure things are flowing and avoid dehydration.
How? Drink at least six to eight glasses of filtered or spring water daily.

Avoid caffeine, tobacco, anything artificial, GMO and processed, added sugars and sweeteners as they put on additional stress on the liver due to their high fructose content

Choose organic vegetables and fruits, if possible, to reduce pesticide exposure, as well as for their higher anti-oxidant and nutritional value. If consuming animal products, also choose organic to avoid exposure to antibiotics and growth hormones and naturally raised for better nutrient profiles (i.e. free range poultry and eggs, wild-caught fish).

Observe yourself, make sure you have at least one good bowl movement a day, to eliminate toxins and waste. Drinking more water also helps to flush the kidneys. Sweating from light exercise also helps. As well as getting good rest, sleeping early, to help your body as it detoxifies.

While you are starting the detox on the physical side of your body, take this time to reflect on other areas of your life that may need attention and may be sources of stress, such as your relationship, emotions, and work. Finally, just take quiet time for yourself, to be with yourself, and take time to just BE! Enjoy yourself.
